Turn-of-the-century 6' 3" Bluthner Aliquot grand in black polyester

This classic turn-of-the-century Aliquot-strung Bluthner 6’ 3” grand in black polyester has undergone a complete factory rebuild, including refinished frame, painstakingly restored original soundboard, new pin-block, re-stringing, complete action rebuild and restoration of the case to “as new” condition.  This is a lovely piano and represents extraordinary value at only £13,950 including ground-floor delivery and post-delivery tuning and toning to suit the piano’s eventual new home, anywhere within mainland UK.

The result of all of this expert reconditioning is a piano with a tone unmatched by any modern instrument of this size. The patented Bluthner Aliquot system, which provides a fourth string to each note from the middle of the piano upwards, resonating an octave above the actual frequency of the other three strings, further enhances this piano’s rich tonal characteristics and Bluthner’s very under-rated Patent action has all the responsiveness of a roller action, but it manages to achieve this with a significnatly lighter touch-weight.

Upon completion of the factory rebuild, the Patent action has been “finessed” by Mike Lewis, our Technical Director, who is undoubtedly one of UK’s top piano technicians, and a renowned expert on Bluthner Patent actions, resulting in a piano which is enormously satisfying to play.

David Rubio French reproduction double-manual harpsichord

Copied from the famous 1769 Pascal Taskin harpsichord in the Russell collection in Edinburgh, this must be one of London’s most frequently heard and seen harpsichords - it goes EVERYWHERE!

With 2 x 8’ stops, a 4’ stop and buff (with a peau-de buffle stop also available if required) this fine harpsichord, made by David Rubio in 1974, has the ultimate “romantic harpsichord” sound so characteristic of the late French makers.

Taskin “cut his teeth” on the “Grand Revellement” technique which was lovingly applied to a large number of the much-prized harpsichords made in the previous century by Hans Ruckers in Antwerp, renowned for their sweet tone.

The “downside” of the Ruckers harpsichords was simply the fact that their compass was too limited to allow performance of the music of fashionable composers such as Couperin and Rameau and so, rather than part with their beloved Ruckers harpsichord, wealthy owners would pay makers such as Taskin to completely rebuild them, retaining the soundboard in the centre section but grafting on a new extended bass section.  At the same time, the two keyboards, which had originally been designed with the upper keyboard transposed half an octave apart from the lower manual, to facilitate “instant transposition” up a fourth or down a fifth, for the benefit of singers whose voice was too low (or high) for the music “as written”, were realigned so that the instrument could be used for the performance of virtuoso harpsichord music writeen for two manuals (such as J. S Bach’s Goldberg Variations) and also for use in the performance of harpsichord concertos.

The proof of the value of these instruments was that a Ruckers, after undergoing a “Grand Ravellement” would actually be worth more than any newly-manufactured instrument.

This instrument is available for short to medium term hire, including delivery and collection and concert tuning and standby.  Please contact us for a quotation.

John Barnes Single-manual Italian harpsichord

This is a large - and powerful - Italian harpsichord with the full 63-note compass with two 8’ stops, one operated by knee-lever, which is available for hire for concerts and recording sessions.

John Barnes built this large Italian instrument in 1971 and we were fortunate to be able to acquire it shortly thereafter.  Since then it has been used in numerous concerts and recording sessions.  The instrument is unusual in being strung in berillium-copper throughout and has a powerful tone throughout the compass.  This, combined with the delightfully shallow touch, makes it the perfect instrument for the performance of virtuoso harpsichord music by Scarlatti, Soler and the other mediterranean composers of the high baroque period.

Adlam Burnett reproduction Heilmann Viennese Fortepiano

Made for us in 1978, this lovely copy of a Heilmann fortepiano of 1785 by Derek Adlam is probably the most frequently-heard fortepiano anywhere in the UK, having done innumerable seasons for Glyndebourne, Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Garsington, Grange Park Opera, English National Opera, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and literally dozens of Haydn ‘Creation’ and ‘The Seasons’ performances at venues from small local churches to the Royal Albert Hall (including a memorable performance early in this summer’s Proms season of ‘The Seasons’ performed by The Handel & Haydn Society of Boston, conducted by Roger Norrington.)

This is as fine an example of a Viennese fortepiano as anything made at the time or recently, having a five-octave compass with sustain, felt-damped “soft pedal” and the strange, clanky ‘jangle’ sound of the curios ‘Fagotti’ stop; all of which are worked by knee-levers. The touch is (to the first-time player) unbelievably light and the depth of touch unbelievably shallow, which helps to explain how Beethoven could have thought to put those octave glissandi into the last movement of his first piano concerto! On this instrument one can actually play them without ripping the skin off one’s fingers!

Most of the instrument is double-strung although the top fourteen keys are triple-strung.

The instrument is quite happy at A=440 (it’s even been as high as A=443 and doesn’t seem to mind) or down at A=430 or even lower.

Hire fees start at £150.00 per day plus delivery and collection and tuning and standby.
